A quick thank you note to...

Robert Douglass
Just wanted to say a big thank you to Robert Douglass who kindly took the time to contact me (and many other selected bloggers) to asked if we wish to have our site added to The Drupal planet. Couldn't turn this down, hell yeah! :-)

For those that know little about Robert Douglass (and shame on you not to know) - He is a long term contributor to the Drupal community (check his impressive list of contrib modules). He recently joined Acquia as a Senior Drupal Advisor.

Site updated to Drupal 5.8

Just updated this site to Drupal 5.8. It seems everything is fine but as you can see from the tab blocks, it's broken. :(

Can't seem to pinpoint where it went wrong so will need to continue digging for clues. Bloody annoying when these little things happen as it really messes up the whole design since the tab really pulls it together. Oh! well i'm sure a fix is just around the corner. Better get some sleep for now... sigh!

UPDATE (30th July):
Sorry late posting (been busy) but just a quick note to say that Drupal 5.9 fixes all the issues encountered in this post. :)  read more »

Porting Drupal 5 modules

You will find that at the stage of upgrading Drupal 5 to Drupal 6 that some of your modules will cease to work. This is because modules must be developed to work with Drupal 6 due to changes within the Drupal API for each new release. If this happens then you will need to first check to see if there is a Drupal 6 release for the modules that you have installed by visiting the Drupal modules page.

If it exist then download the module and install it. Otherwise, you may help out and start porting the module so it will run on drupal 6. This isn't too difficult of a task, thanks to the core developers that have made it easier than before.

  • Where to find more information about changes between Drupal versions.
  • How to use Coder module to convert a simple module from Drupal 5 to Drupal 6, step by step.
  • How to test to ensure the porting status was a success.

Installing Drupal 6

Before we can begin any work on Drupal, we must first prepare and install Drupal either on your web host server or locally on your own machine for testing.

Below is video clips to guide you through on how to install Drupal 6 (the process is pretty the same for Drupal 5):

Path redirect with Drupal

Today, while I was doing a quick search on Google on my own site to see what result it will bring up, I was surprised to find a broken link which took a user to /taxonomy/term/CrossBrowserTesting.com page that doesn't exist on my site. I really don't know how that link ever popped up on Google.  read more »

Switching to Bulb mode on a Nikon D70

Some people may not know but it is possible to get long exposure times (up to 30 seconds) on a Nikon D70. This is done by putting the camera into 'Bulb mode' as it is called. To do this, you'll need to set the camera setting to 'manual' mode and then turn the shutter speed dial until it goes into 'bulb mode'. Now when shooting, hold down the shutter button for as long as you want (this will be your exposure), when you release the button that is when it takes the shot.

A little advise, it is often better when you have something to control the button remotely while taking the shot as this will reduce any camera shake by holding down the button for a long time.
